I love a well set table, even for casual outdoor gatherings, however, I hate when the wind blows napkins and other tableware around and onto the ground. This placemat will solve that problem. The patch pocket will keep everything neat, tidy and in place whether you are dining indoors or outdoors.
The center of the placemat is a corner to corner rectangle (I’m fascinated with these corner to corner patterns lately – have you seen my Confetti Blanket yet?). I finished the placemat with a simple herringbone border and patch pocket. You could alternate different colors in the corner to corner section. I think this would be so cute in red and white stripes with a blue patch pocket covered in stars ~ maybe I’ll have to make a set and test it out.

R14: Ch 6, turn, dc in 4th ch and next 2 ch, sl st in ch 3 space of previous row, [ch 3, 3 dc around ch 3 from previous row, sl st in ch 3 space of previous row] 12 times. (13 blocks)

R1: Join Main Color in any corner, ch1, turn, [3 sc in corner st, 1 sc in each vertical dc, 2 sc in side of each horizontal dc] 4 times. Join with sl st to beg st. Be sure to have an even number of stitches on each side not including the 3 corner sts. Fasten off.
R2 (right side row): Join Contrasting Color in center st of any corner st, turn, ch3 (counts as dc), sc in same st, *[dc in next st, sc in next st] repeat to next corner, [dc, sc] in center corner st*. Repeat between * two more times, [dc in next st, sc in next st] repeat to last corner, join with sl st to beg st. Fasten off.
R3: Join Main Color repeat Round 2.
For each row, run the color not in use along top of previous row and crochet over this yarn, this will minimize the amount of fastening off and ends you will have to weave.

R2 (right side row): Join Main Color, turn, [ch 3 (counts as dc), sc in next st, [dc in next st, sc in next st], repeat to end.
R3 to R12: Repeat Row 2, alternating colors.
R13: With Contrasting Color, ch1, turn, sc in each st to end.
R14: Ch 1 turn, work a row of sc around all 4 sides, being sure to have 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off. Sew in place on right side of placemat.
