Free Crochet Pattern: Felicity Newsboy Hat

Felicity Newsboy Hat

I  Iove the look of a newsboy hat and this one is so beautiful with the textured and slightly lacy stitches. It works up so fast with two strands of worsted weight yarn and a big hook or you can try it in a bulky (just be sure to check gauge). I gave you three sizes so  there should be something for everyone. I hope you enjoy making it and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.

Felicity Newsboy Hat

Size:
Toddler – Head Circumference = 18 – 19″
Child – Head Circumference = 19 – 21″
Adult – Head Circumference = 22 – 23″

Materials:
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn such as Lily Sugar N Cream; 200 – 300 yards
Hook Size K / 6.50 mm
Yarn Needle
1″ Buttons (2)

Gauge (Double Stranded):
9.5 double crochet and 5.5 rows = 4″

Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st(s) – slip stitch(es)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Padded Single Crochet: On the brim rows, you will work a row of sl sts. The next row of SC will be worked over the sl sts, into the SC sts from the previous row so that they will encase the sl sts. You do not work into the sl sts themselves. This creates a thick, padded sc stitch.

Notes:

  • Pattern is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together throughout.
  • Beginning ch 1 or ch 2 of the round does not count as a stitch.
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round (not the beginning chain).
  • Start each round in the same stitch as the join, unless directed otherwise.
  • Number in ( ) at end of round indicates the number of stitches in that round.
  • Work instructions between * the designated number of times.
  • Instructions between [ ] are all worked into the same stitch.

Is there a video tutorial of this particular pattern?

  3. CrochetZone

    You are welcome!

I’ve tried this pattern twice now and the edge of my hat always turns out scalloped. Help! I love the hat in the picture but mine doesn’t look anything like that!

Beautiful practical crochet! I appreciate how you give instruction for different sizes for the hats. I am a small adult and have a child size head, but want an adult look. So thank you for putting extra effort into printing a variety of sizes for your hats! Now to make one!

It seems I made a search and replace error on that round. It’s been corrected now. Thanks!

Thank you for the kind words. There was an error in the instructions for Round 4, but they have been corrected now. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

Maybe it’s because it’s late but I can’t figure out how row 12 of the adult hat can only have 51 sts when you are adding the sc at the beginning of each scallop? Shouldn’t it be 51+17?

Love this hat…..but having trouble with Child hat on round 4. I only come up with 43 stitches.
Maybe someone could give me a hint of what I’m doing wrong.

  10. This is adorable! Thank you so much for sharing!! 🙂
